Who is STRAWMAN? We are three Torontonian ‘thought criminals’ – JP, Joe and Duff. With a keen sense of humour, we love to create and perform progressive music. Why the name STRAWMAN? Well we all have one – to find yours you need look no further than at your birth certificate or at the all-caps name on your phone bill. A STRAWMAN represents you and me, however, it’s an entirely different incorporated identity that you may not even know exists. Our music looks to bring meaning to this faceless entity.
Since forming in 2005, we’ve been developing our own unique sound, heavily influenced by a wide range of musicians: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, progressive stalwarts Rush and Genesis to more contemporary acts Tool, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age, to name a few. Incorporating these influences into our unique sound, we’ve coined the term “de-programming” rock to describe our driving sound and poignant lyrics.
Well-versed on the Toronto music scene, we’ve been privileged to play the city’s most legendary venues, garnering support along the way. In addition to interviews with Guitar Justice magazine and Aj&dbs Indie Music Agency, our music has been featured on Canada’s Biker TV and the trailer for Septagon Studios digital comic book release Gator Butch. Having overcome some setbacks in 2011 (Duff proved extremely fragile) we were back in the studio to end 2011 and start 2012. After the early-2011 release of “End the Romance”, we are kicking off 2012 with the just-released single “Locked Doors”, and will follow up shortly with “Cavity” (working title). We’ll be supporting these releases with many upcoming shows as we continue to make our mark on the music scene.
